Recent goings on.

Well, its been a while.

2010 has kicked off to a great start! This is my first post written on my new MacBook Pro! As always iv left it too long between posts, but i thought i would give a quick update before the big image change comes… Thats right, i’m redesigning my site. This is something i’m currently on with, as well as some new personal pieces & folio updates to show! One of these is my submission to The Renmen Project (below) a fantastic project set up to help the victims of the Haiti earthquake be selling prints and other pieces to raise money for Unicef.

365 photo a day project!

Firstly – Happy new year to you all!

The regular readers of my blog (prior to switching to Wordpress) will know that I attempted completing a 365 photo project last year… However, a few camera issues resulted in me failing!

2010 brings the challenge again, to take a photo a day- for the whole year! Now with the power of Photoshop and Flickr apps on my iPhone, I have decided to tackle the task in a more personal “this is what I’m up to” way rather than taking creative, studio shot photos! Although I’m sure a few may sneak in there…

Hopefully this will you give you a little insight into more of the day to day things that I get up to!

I’ve attached my first photo here… I was having some New years day Wii action… In the photo is me and Daniel Maw, my good pal!I have no idea what’s going on with my expression, but hey ho Wii tennis is serious stuff! Keep checking back for updates on how the year goes!

My 365 can be seen at my Flickr set – http://www.flickr.com/photos/kywilkinson/sets/72157623120063764/

Let’s all have a good 2010!

Don’t Panic poster entry…

KyWilinson_dontpanicentry

I decided to have a quick pop at the Don’t Panic poster competition…

I’ve always thought of entering when they come up but for one reason or another i never have. Like an arse i thought the deadline of the Monday the 7th was the final call for entries, and with it being Monday the 7th when i decided to enter, i didn’t have much time with the thinking cap! The theme for the poster was “Value” i decided to focus my piece on valuing yourself, my reasons for this is that its becoming all to common for people to want to be someone else. Why? Why not want to be you? I wanted to keep the design really clean and simple, just to strengthen the message…

Anyways, thats enough of me rambling on… If you would be so kind to share a vote for my poster you can do so here

Showcase – Nicola Ellen

NicolaEllen-1

Nicola’s experimentation with her typographic pieces is what caught my eye with her work, the lashings of colour and her flowing patterns creating the letters really stood out! She recently completed her degree in Sunderland, but now she’s back to her original stomping ground of Rotherham! Yorkshire is truly the only place to be! Anyways this young talent is definitely one to keep an eye on…her experimentation and have a go attitude is fantastic, one of her recent Twitter posts sums this up…”I just covered an A3 sketchbook page in mascara. Why? Just because.”

Nicola has bee very kind to answer a few questions and to give a little insight into her world…

What makes you tick?
Muse, inks, Disney films, caramel chocolate drops, fashion magazines, intricate patterns, graffiti, typography, bright colours and walking around Laura Ashley.

NicolaEllen-4

Who and what inspires you?
Illustrator, James Jean has inspired me for a long time by his life drawings that are shown on his website. Linzie Hunter’s light hearted and simple hand lettering inspires me. I love the colours she uses too. I love the boldness and rebelliousness of graffiti, fashion and any kind of typography, though mainly decorative. I am also fascinated by the sky.

How would you describe your style?
I wouldn’t really say I have a particular style as I am constantly experimenting and learning. I am still trying to find out the best ways that I work. I am much attached to detailed patterns and typography, although I am trying to loose that and evolve my typography. I have started working in a bolder way too in regards to text and a much floatier, watery way with my illustrations. The one thing that remains consistent though is that whatever medium I use, I always end up going back to my inks.

NicolaEllen-5

How do you start a project?
I start off by drawing anything that comes to mind initially and then I fully research the brief and client, finding out the key areas. I then draw everything I can think of again. I go for a walk or have a break from the project and then go back to it with fresh ideas and a clear mind.

What’s your favorite thing about being a designer / illustrator?
I work in a chocolate shop during the day and I draw and create and explore new places in my spare time. I cannot think of a better way to spend my time!

NicolaEllen-3

Who is your favorite designer at the moment?
Tara McPherson. I love her style and characters, especially the ones with the missing hearts.

Keep up to date with Nicola at : http://thedrawingsofamixed-upmind.blogspot.com/ & twitter.com/nicolaellen

Ky trainers

KyTrainers

Iv been wanting to give drawing on trainers a whirl for a while now, but as with many things, iv not been able to due to time restrictions… I saw these yellow pumps in the sales and decided to have a stab at it and out came the Sharpies.

I really enjoyed working on these, drawing on something that isn’t flat is a different challenge and i couldn’t decide if i was going to make the trainers symetrical/identical or not, but im really happy how they’ve come out and im going to look at doing more soon to sell in my online store, which is also coming soon when my website has had its redesign! Leading to possible freebies down the line! Exciting times.

For now, if anyone’s interested in me drawing on shoes or anything else for that matter get in touch!

Showcase – Jessica Rose Penfold

Jessica Rose Penfold

Introducing the 25 year old London illustrator Jessica Rose Penfold, an exciting creative with stacks of talent, Jess is certainly one to watch out for.
With clients like Gash, Vice and FUN Magazine she’s already on the road to greatness, of which i’m sure she will achieve. Jess has been described as ‘one of those girls who has an infectious and mesmerizing personality’ words that i would also choose to describe her work.

Jess has been ever so kind to answer a few questions to get an insight into the world of Jessica Rose Penfold.

What makes you tick?

Pens, paper, comic books- Love and Rockets, Strangers In Paradise, Box Office Poison- american TV shows- this week it’s X-files, last week it was True Blood: I watch them while I draw – orange squash, my drawing board, Wolverine/Logan.

Jessica Rose Penfold

What are your influences and who are your biggest inspirations?

I would say that my influences are the who and my inspirations are the what.My influences include Judge Dredd, Adrian Tomine, Jamie Hernandez, Kurt Vonnegut, Douglas Adams, Death Cab for Cutie, Juliana Hatfield, mixtapes from my friends. As for inspiration, that comes from much closer to home. I am inspired when i see that doing what you love for a living is achievable. I am also inspired by conversations, overheard passing comments and one-liners.

Jessica Rose Penfold

What’s involved in a normal day for you?

IDEALLY (and on days away from my 9 to 5)- drawing all day
REALISTICALLY- I work/waste time in an office as a studio manager for 8 hours (while covertly emailing for personal gain), then I go home and draw all evening.

How would you describe your style?

I would say it is somewhere between illustration and comics. Hand-drawn (everything i do is hand-drawn) clean lines, predominantly in black and white, often with a single colour highlight.

How long have you been in the design industry?

I am not sure I would say I was in the design industry yet, but I have been doing some freelance illustration for the past 3 years, since I left University.

Jessica Rose Penfold

Have you any advice to people who may be looking at a career in design?

Right now I feel like I’m the one who needs advice! From my experience (and mistakes), my advice would be make the most of your student years; join competitions, put on exhibitions, put yourself out there. Say yes to everything at the beginning; it’s all about exposure. The other thing I would say is that confidence is everything. Confidence in your abilities and alot of hardwork.

To keep you eye on Jess and to see more of her work visit: www.jessicapenfold.com and www.jessicarosepenfold.blogspot.com or contact her on jp@jessicapenfold.com

I would like to say thanks to Jess for taking the time out to give us an insight into her goings on and hope to see more of her in the future! If you would like to be considered for the Showcase please contact me on ky@kywilkinson.co.uk

Live drawing and Wordpress fun

So then, not too long along ago I went to Huddersfield to experience some live drawing and have a gander at Jeffrey Bowman’s super skills with a posca…

The event took place in the Verve bar, a cracking place in the centre of Huddersfield with a really creative vibe running throughout… The DJ’s were blasting out some killer tunes and a good time was had by all. The Crim Collective, including Jeffrey Bowman were brilliant, attacking the massive 7ft boards with a flurry of creativity, the individual styles merging together seamlessy to produce some stunning imagery…

I myself managed to have a dabble at some drawing too, I grabbed a thick red posca and had a quick doodle…

You may have noticed that i’v made the switch to Wordpress, this being the reason for my blog not being updated for a while…I decided to force myself to learn some basic HTML and threw myself into the deep end by removing my old website before I’d built my new site, forcing me to crack on! I enjoyed building my new site although at times hugely frustrating and its still not finished! The main reason for me making the switch to Wordpress however was the iPhone Wordpress app! This now means I can post more often from wherever I am!

To conclude, Jeffrey Bowman is a true gent, and highly talented, drawing in bars with beers and music is fantastic and HTML is a pain in the ass…
